“Beyond the Beach” follows EMERGENCY’s humanitarian projects in Afghanistan, Iraqi Kurdistan, and along the world’s deadliest migration route – the central Mediterranean. Watch humanity endure through war, violence, and displacement, and learn the personal stories of the people who dedicate their lives to working on the front lines.
More than five years on from the events of the film, EMERGENCY’s Kabul Surgical Centre continues to serve as a key traumatology hospital in Afghanistan’s capital, with more than half of patients admitted in 2023 treated for war-related injuries. The primary care clinics in Iraq were transferred to local health authorities as they approached self-sustainability, the goal of every EMERGENCY project, while operations at the Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration Centre continue, run entirely by local staff. EMERGENCY has also escalated its work in the Mediterranean, launching its own search and rescue ship, Life Support, in December 2022.
This powerful story of hope is narrated through the lives of medical professionals on the ground as they bravely confront war's terrors and civilian woes, from ISIS-overrun Northern Iraq, brutal violence in Afghanistan, to the tragic migrant humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean. It is an enduring story of humanity's resilience and compassion.
"War is the worst habit of the human species," says Trauma Surgeon Dr. Gino Strada. This is just one of the powerful statements in this documentary that follows healthcare professionals who devote themselves to caring for civilians caught in the brutality of war zones and fleeing their homelands.
"Beyond the Beach" provides insight into the desperation, pain, and will to survive from both those fleeing conflict and those trying to help. It sheds light on the desperation that leads people to flee one country in hopes of being received with compassion and care in another, offering a sobering view into decisions that turn citizens into refugees. The film projects the capacity for humanity that can and does exist in seemingly hopeless situations.
